Chapter 2
I quickly found a small area under a bridge, where the rain was unable to get me, and I could sleep for the night. But staring at the dirt on the ground made me feel gloomy inside, so I decided to sit down, burying my head in my knees. I looked back at my tails, and noticed a number of twigs and leaves buried in my fur, and sighed again. It was weeks, months maybe, since I had a decent bath or shower. Maybe, if I get this new job, I'll be able to get a decent shower. That would be the day, I though. Finally the ground felt welcoming, and I laid my had down in the dirt, and closed my eyes, drifting into a deep slumber. I prayed for a brighter day, and just as I was able to truly slumber, I heard a noise; the sound of someone walking near the bridge. The sound was faint, and I didn't bother opening my eyes to check. But the next thing I heard was rocks rolling and bouncing off each other, then the sound of heavy breathing, like someone who was scared was right next to me. Quickly I shot up, opening my eyes quickly, and stared at the newcomer. It was a boy, about a teen, with light brown hair and blue eyes. He wore a simple white shirt and jeans under a large yellow jacket, and his arm was outstretched, reaching for my tails, which would be bad, if he isn't a Demon.
“Who are you?” I quickly asked, and like a spell, the boy broke from his trance, and quickly took off, running back the way I came in, and disappeared from sight. I froze there for a second, and quickly sat back down, looking under the bridge for no reason. Out of the corner of my eye again I noticed the boy, peaking past the wall. I made no movement, but waited to see what he was planning. He finally walked away from the wall, and towards me.
“.... You're not going to chase me?” He asked calmly, but his fear was in plain sight; his right knee kept shaking.
“Why? You didn't do anything worth the chase.” I replied without looking at him. He didn't say anything else, but instead sat down next to me, and held his hand out.
“My name's Ken.” he said calmly. “What's yours?” I looked at him, and noticed a innocent smile on his face, like he wasn't scared of me anymore, and yet saw me as a friend, not an enemy.
“Kitsume.” I replied without moving. Ken held his hand for alittle longer, then put to his side, and looked outward.
“So, what are you doing down here?” He asked. “Seems like a strange place to live, but what do I know?”
“I don't live here...” I mumbled. “I only sleep here...”
“On the ground? That must be hard.”
“You think I want to live like this?” I asked. “I never asked to live like this.”
“Then what's your story?” Ken asked. “There must be a reason why you're all alone on this night.”
“Why are you here?” I asked swiftly, hoping to change the conversation towards him; I hated talking about my sad excuse of a life.
“Well, I was going for a simple walk, but once the rain came down, I had to take shelter, and well, here we are.” Ken replied.
“Yeah, here we are...” I replied in a low tone, trying to hold the sob in my throat. He did notice something, and quickly stood up.
“Well, if you'll like, you could stay at my place.” He said, brushing the dirt off his jeans. I flinched, and looked up at him.
“You.... you mean it?” I asked. “But... I have nothing to...”
“You don't need to repay me.” He said with a chuckle. “I'm just doing my best to help you.”
“Why?” I asked. This truly was rare for me, but I didn't know if it was true kindness, or a trick for something dark.
“Because you seem alone, and I want to be your friend.” He replied, holding his hand out. “So, what do you say?”
As Kistume returns to her usual sleeping area way from the damp rain, she is greeted by a strange visitor...
